part of the olympics obsessed with security and safety. another making sure the athletes are focused on how they got here. >> we're all just really excited and we're not going to get too concerned about any like thing that's, any other things that are going on, we're just excited to go there and experience the olympic feeling. >> so, again, paulina focused on training here and thinking about the games themselves, but much of our family and support staff is from russia, so she is thinking a lot about what's going on there and about sochi itself. we will talk to her at 6:00 about russia and her feelings about that country. for now, we're reporting live in san jose. >> thanks, scott. and speaking of security, u.s. and russian sources have told nbc news that as many as four women plan to carry out suicide bombings during the olympic games. the women are known as black widows, wives of suspected

islamic terrorists who have been killed. today, police handed out photographs of one woman who may have entered the area two weeks ago. russian security says they have the situation under control and calling for full cooperation on the russian side. coming up, we're going to show you what u.s. is sending to russia in order to help evacuate in the event of an attack. and head to nbcbayarea.com for more on the countdown to sochi, plus, also sign up for our newsletter. i'll be traveling to sochi to bring you the news that matters. a mother who lost her 13-year-old son just a few weeks ago has now lost another son. it's a painfully familiar story. her youngest son was only 13 years old, gunned down on new year's eve on 104th avenue near walnut street.

her oldest son was shot and killed just yesterday near the intersection of 100th and longfellow. cheryl, what's the reaction from this mother? >> well, mothers are devastated this this particular situation and right now, police need your help. in this case, you have two mothers mourning the death of two best friends. one of the mothers lost the son just 19 days ago. lamar was shot and killed yesterday along with his best friend, derek harris. this happened three weeks after broussard's 13-year-old brother was killed just two blocks from their home as he was walking home from the boys and girls club. about 100 of his friends gathered to remember him. >> i don't know anything, and hopefully, the community and people will come forward because how can a mother experience this

too often within 19 days of both her kids. it's horrible. >> i also spoke with derek harris' mother today. she's devastated by all of this, of course, and she says people are heartless and have no morals. police have no suspects in this case. but lee weathersby's mother said she is begging for no retaliation in this case. reporting live in oakland. the search has been called u off for a fisherman swept out to sea. in the -- witnesses say a wave knocked the fibber man's ice chest into the ocean. he went in after it and was overcome by the waves. the victim's body was found about an hour later. his identity has not been released. friends of a teenage girl

hit and killed by a light rail train have created an online donation site for her funeral arrangements. this is the site we're going to show you. where you can donate to the family of 14-year-old danica garcia. a memorial has grown in the spot with where a light rail train hit her on friday. grief counselors are expected to be on hand when classes resume tomorrow. money meant for kids apparently went to home renovations instead. tonight, a local non-profit is suing its former bookkeeper, accusing her of embezzling more than $200,000 that should have gone to help the less privilege. we have more with more on these accusations and chase, this non-profit helped kids across the bay area. >> they sure do. in fact, we're talking about 2500 kids and teenagers every single week that are helped by -- they're in this brown brick gym just across the

street. they decided to take this matter to court. they say this money was essentially taken out of the hands of kids. at least $200,000. now, the suit was filed in superior court in san mateo county against valerie cur, the former bookkeeper and her husband, jeffrey charles. the suit claims the couple used most of this money to renovate their house in south san francisco and also according to the suit, cur worked as bookkeeper fer quite some time. she took this money out and allegedly falsified financial records to hide the money that was being taken. it is a non-profit. they teach kids about acrobatics and go into schools that can't afford to have a pe class. when we talked to thabs, they were stunned by these allegations. >> i thought they were wonderful people and to find out that she embezzled, i mean, i don't know

why somebody would do that because he worked hard and i thought he was making a real good living. >> we tried to reach the curs and they have not responded. their attorneys told them not to talk to us on camera about this, but did say despite this missing cash they have been able to continue their program, but again, we're talking about a non-profit here, so they say $200,000 certainly hurts. live in san francisco, nbc bay area news. well, it's turned into a national debate. a sportsmanship race and media access. the controversial comments made by richard sherman. you might have seen that in that bizarre interview. sherman, a stanford graduate, belittled michael crabtree, calling him mediocre. this happened just momenting after the dramatic ending in

fishermen. martin luther king jr. day is normally a popular time for tahoe ski resorts, but not this time. it's bad for business and bad for the environment. earlier this month, the first snow survey of the winter showed the snow pack at just 20% of average for the year. the snow pack provides a thinker third of the state's water simply and lake shasta is also hurting tonight. the water levels are way below full capacity. not as bad as the 1977 drought, but still extremely l lly low. but state officials say there's still time to make up for the difference and are hoping for rain. coming up, the bay area honors martin luther king. the new push to keep an annual tradition rolling along. >> and he's been held in north korea for more than a year. today, we hear from kenneth bay. in san jose, where this restaurant has a fire station

just 150 yards away and yes, it is a total loss. we'll talk about why the fire burned so fast. firefighters couldn't even get inside. and oakland, one of several bay area cities that had new record highs today. mild temperatures still in the 0e6s right now, but the focus of this week will be some strong, gusty winds increasing fire danger. we'll talk more about those changes when we come right back.

it took just minutes for a popular south bay coffee shop to go up in flames and even having a fire station just around the corner wasn't enough to save it. chris sanchez is live at the flames coffee shop with what firefighters say there was just no way to get inside to fight that fire. >> you can see the fire sfags station right behind me, so

close to the restaurant that their response time was just one minute, but this is an holder building. it went up in 1968 and likely did not have sprinklers. add to that, a load of kitchen grease fuelling that fire. all weekend lorngs people stopped by the restaurant on san jose's hillsdale avenue which saturday morning was gutted by a four alarm fire. >> just wanteded to see if they were still here. >> 10-year-old braden's family used to stop in on bike outings. >> these are older buildings and i don't think too many of them do have the sprinkler systems in there. >> a fire captain says it looks like the restaurant may not have had sprinklers, but should have a system in the kitchen. a system that would automatically released extinguishing liquid over the cook area in the event of a fire. the fire started just before 6:30 saturday morning as several employees were getting things ready ahead of opening time. >> all of a sudden, the wall

just started shaking, making a lot of noise and i ran to the front and there was a fire. >> the chef ran out the door and across the street to san jose fire station 9, less than 150 yards away, but it was still too late to save the building. >> they tried to make an interior attack. they weren't able to because the fire was so well advanced. >> the fire was four alarm and as it raged, firefighters were watching one nearby business in particular, a gas station right next door, but with 75 firefighters and 26 engines and ladder trucks on the job, the captain says the flames did not reach the gas station or tire store next door. >> been around for decade. been a part of people's lives. >> the san jose fire association has talked about the impact staffing has had on response times. response time not the problem here, but they did rotate people

around the city, crews and rigs to make sure no spot in the city was uncovered while they were battling this four alarm blaze. well, american missionary den et bay called on the united states to help free him from north korea. the north koreans arrested him a little more than a year ago. they accused him of using his tourism business to form antigovernment groups and sentenced him to 15 years hard labor. today, bay spoke as a news conference where he apologized and admitted to committing crimes against north korea. he also said he asked to confess. now, it's not known if he was speak speaking with his own words or was forced to do so. >> from coast to coast, people are honoring the memory of dr. martin luther king jr. many people gathered at the memorial in washington, d.c. to pay tribute. others paid tribute through marches and in song. today's federal holiday is devoted to the slain civil rights leader.

president obama and his family joined other volunteers in the nation's capitol for a special service. >> i feel great because we're trying to do something like martin luther king jr. >> helping one another. >> good. >> joe biden subjected if dr. king was still alive today, he would be fighting for immigration reform. there used to be plenty of these around the country and now, there's just one. and it's here. the annual mlk freedom train. >> this morning in san jose, passengers boarded a train ride through history. since the '80s, the freedom train has carried riders from san jose to san francisco, evoking the journey of dr. martin luther king jr. >> we spent a lot of time reminiscing about what it must have been like for people of that particular era and what the struggles of poor people and people of color and women. >> as the train arrived in san

francisco, there was a fear among -- and others that this year's freedom train would be the last. >> we understood the service might be coming to an aendened didn't want to miss the opportunity. >> organizers said they might have to cancel future freedom trains because of lack of interest. riders called the annual journey a moving experience. >> youth from my church, friends, family. a great experience. >> but long time riders sean alexander of the jack and jill children's organization said new restrictions this year inspired her group to buy tickets on a different train. >> when i asked if they would let us come together on the freedom train in a car so we can be together with the kids and parents, they said -- >> in the end, organizers said more than 1,000 people road today's train and that it would probably be back next year. that sentiment was echoed by

erin of the northern california mlk junior community foundation. >> we as a foundation are committed to making sure that train survives and we are looking to work with our partners down in santa clara to ensure that that train not only survives, but it continues. >> he said the train, which is the last freedom train in the country is a deep connection to the past and laid the tracks for generations to come. >> it was a special train and a special holiday for this country. >> people probably enjoyed the nice weather. >> and we did see a nice day outside today. mostly sunny skies. little hazy in spots and we've been seeing that especially around the south bay. the familiar orange sunset.

we did manage record breaking highs, i think this is about the fifth or sixth record that we've broken here in the last seven days. san francisco tieing the record. get close to 70 degrees. now, unfortunately, air qualify, still not that great. it is spare the air getting ready for tomorrow, but still in the moderate range. this is going to take us to tuesday and wednesday. we will continue to see moderate air quality levels, but thursday into friday, those levels start to come down because the winds are really going to start howling around the bay area. right now, not too much of a breeze outside. these are offshore winds, which are helping to boost temperatures again. out towards the coast, mid-70s, santa cruz, a lot of those winds were pointing offshore. however, by this time next week, there are finally some sometimes on the horizon we may see a

change in the horizon. right now, a lot of storms on the pacific, but they're all bottled up protecting the west coast. all these storms kind of just rotate up towards british columbia. what we're watching here in the next seven to ten days is a pattern shift that will begin late in the weekend. here comes a cold front that doesn't completely fall apart now. this is next monday and tuesday. t been a while being able to bring at least some rain into the area. areas north of truckee could see a little bit of rain and snow next week, so stay tuned. you'll see those changes. and for next week, possibly deal with some rain, but here's the problem. before we get there, we're going to see an area of low pressure drop down the east side of a sierra and wednesday into thursday, fire dangers around the bay area, so higher peaks around the bay area, looking at the wind gusts getting up to 45

miles an hour. but for now, these north winds in january, it's not normally a problem, but with how dry conditions have been, fire danger for the second half of the week. but temperature wise tomorrow, not too much winds, again, those winds picking up wednesday night. 70 degrees in san jose. temperatures in the low 70s around morgan hill. peninsula temperatures close to 70. redwood city and into the north bay, highs near 70 in napa. again, close to records for another day. we will see temperatures cooling down as you see there in the seven day forecast, but wind unfortunately is the big problem as we head towards thursday and friday. red flag warnings likely. but we hope next week finally a chance of some rain and snow in the long range forecast. back to you. >> thanks, rob. coming up next, it cost a lot to transform to gotham city, now, who's footing the bill to make miles' dream come true? and one local business came out on top.

a bay area couple is coming to the rescue. paying off the tab for san francisco's bat kid celebration. the john and marcia goldman foundation wrote a $105,000 check to the city to cover the cost of the event. john goldman said he didn't want the make-a-wish foundation to pay back the city for the set up and public safety costs. he said he and his wife decided to step in and pay for it all. last november, san francisco was turned into gotham city to help a 5-year-old leukemia patient to live out his dream of being a superhero. more than 8 million bucks,

that's the estimated price tag of the contract dispute that caused months of negotiation. the "san francisco chronicle" reports that bart spent more than $2 million. half of that money was paying the salaries of those who took time off their job to work on this deal. nearly $5,000 was spent on take out orders. one business made more than $2500 on sandwich orders. more than 1 million went to the charter buses that bart paid to shuttle commuters during those two strikes. and bart reportedly lost $5 million during those walkouts. we reached tout bart, which would not confirm these figures, but did say everything was a one-time money expenditure. a new recall involving a popular dinner dish. almost two million pounds of

nbc has decided to make it an annual event. the network will present "peter pan." no casting decisions have been announced yet, but an nbc exec says he would love to see taylor swift, miley cyrus or justin bieber in the cast. 49er fans who wagered bets on the seattle game are feeling a little crabby today. the owners of f the fish company at fisherman's wharf waged crab on the game. they discovered crab voyaging when they suddenly got a lot of shipping orders in last year's super bowl. they're now starting to get a lot of orders following last night's loss. many of the orders have notes. >> they're saying enjoy your win with the best crab in the country. someone put congrats on the big win. good win or you're the winner. >> not a bad way to bet on a
